Diffusion
While absorption removes energy from the room, diffusion scatters it in multiple directions. This preserves the sense of liveliness and spaciousness that makes a room feel natural rather than dead. Diffusers are most effective on the wall behind the listening position and on rear walls where late reflections originate.
Bass Management
Low-frequency energy accumulates in room corners and along wall-ceiling boundaries, creating uneven bass response. Dedicated bass traps — typically thick, dense absorbers placed in corners — help control this buildup. Without proper bass management, even the finest loudspeakers will produce boomy, uneven low-frequency reproduction.
Practical Steps for Any Room
- Add a thick area rug between your speakers and listening position to tame floor reflections
- Place bookshelves with irregularly sized books on rear walls for natural diffusion
- Use heavy curtains on windows near speaker positions to reduce glass reflections
- Avoid placing speakers directly against walls unless designed for boundary reinforcement
- Experiment with speaker and seating positions before investing in treatments
